It is with heavy heart this week that we bid a fond farewell to the Isotope's beloved Cultural Attaché, Josh Richardson. And while Mister Richardson isn't leaving us, you'll still see him working Special Ops during many of our future events (and co-hosting on our tiki tours)... he won't be gracing the Communique with his smiling face during our weekly staff photos for the foreseeable future.
But we're sending him out on the highest note we know how, with a private dinner and staff pictures with Josh's favorite comic creator, Darwyn Cooke!
Josh, thanks for your enthusiasm, hard work, and for promoting the Isotope culture so wonderfully over the years. And we look forward to having cocktails and good cheer whenever your schedule permits. You've always got friends and family here at the Isotope!

Ask, Dear Friends, And You Shall Receive It... Morrison & Porter's JLA Gets Deluxe Treatment
First it was the release of the Jack Kirby's Fourth World Omnibii, then the announcement of the drool-inducing Starman Hardcovers, and now we're getting Deluxe hardcovers of Grant Morrison & Howard Porter's JLA run?
Yes!
Somebody at DC Comics must be reading our secret wish diary. Now if only they would remember to get this, this, and and this back in print too. Maybe they haven't gotten to those diary pages just yet...?
Anyway, for having the good sense to give us exactly what we've all been hoping for recently, thank you, DC!Labels: comics, Grant Morrison

Catch Chris Brandt's Comics Doc Tonight @ Cartoon Art Museum
It's movie night, people! Because really, who doesn't need another reason to visit San Francisco's delightful Cartoon Art Museum?
If you're reading this website you probably like comics just as much as I do. And if you happen to also like watching documentaries as well (my current doc obsessions include Dark Days, Incident at Oglala, King of Kong, and American Hardcore), you're probably going to want to check this out.
Film-maker Chris Brandt travels the country to capture interviews with great independent comic folks like Jessica Abel, Eric Powell, Jim Woodring, Craig Thompson, Johnny Ryan, Carla Speed McNeil, Scott McCloud, Robert Williams, and many more people behind the indy books you know and love. And heck, Brandt even throws in an interview with a certain proprietor of Isotope - the comic book lounge in too!
Want to know more? Check out this review and interview to get a taste of what to expect. And then get out to the Cartoon Art Museum tonight and see the film for yourself!

On The Eve of the Final Issue of Y The Last Man Not a Movie Adaptation, But a Trilogy of Movies!
This is the week when the conclusion, the final, the last ever issue of Y The Last Man hits the new arrivals rack. My staff and I couldn't be more excited to see how this amazing series ends, but at the same time we're downright shell-shocked by the notion that such a wonderful staple of our monthly reading enjoyment is about to come to an end.
What are we going to do without Y in our lives?!
But trust the always divine pop culture icon Whitney Matheson to brighten even the darkest clouds and make our hearts soar with an exclusive scoop of delightful new Y the movie adaptation news!
You heard it right, mi amigos, three movies. Go check out Ms. Matheson's end of series tribute in the pages of USAToday, with words from series author Brian K. Vaughan, along with the smartest man in comics Tom Spurgeon, and also the juicy-secret-dropping Y the movie adaptation director D.J. Caruso. You'll be glad you did.
Or for the digitally inclined, you can read it here:
Why, oh 'Y,' must 'Last Man' end?
This fantastic news really brightens our day and has us looking forward to the arrival of this final issue even more! Do drop us an email to reserve your copy of this last issue, and for those of you who will be requiring a post Y the Last Man support group (I know I will) we will be having our first meeting this Wednesday night at this location.Labels: Brian K Vaughan, comics, movies, Whitney Matheson

Here at the Isotope we love the artform so much that when we're picking out our preferred snacks to munch on for the afternoon and see a label that says "Comic Inside!" it's clear what we'll be dropping the hard-earned American dollars on.
And today's champion of comic-related snacking goes to Everybody's Nuts! Pistachios which came with the following strip.

Move Over Superstars of Yesteryear Basie S. Rocks The Comics World
Most of you already know all about the new ongoing series The Masked Mutant by comic creator to watch out for Basie S. What you might not know is that since the great reviews started hitting the book has been building serious indy buzz. And each subsequent printing of these books have been flying off the shelves!
With anticipation of the at-the-printers-as-we-speak second issue building, Basie has proven once again that 7 year old know-how beats out "big two" business acumen and has ordered his publishing and production crew to give the people what they want... and get this wildfire hit back in print once again.
And in a publicity move that shocked San Francisco's beautiful Hayes Valley district, this new print run was delivered not by the typical official armed courier Basie S. is famous for... but by the Lucha Libre star of the book... the actual Masked Mutant himself! We here at the Isotope were thrilled to get to meet this larger than life hero!
Comic creators of the industry should take note of the impressive marketing wizardry and great business sense of this rising young talent. No doubt these fourth printings of The Masked Mutant #1 are going to be selling out just as fast as the previous printings but we sure are happy to have them in stock right now. Drop us an email to reserve your copy before they do! Labels: Basie S, comics, lucha

The Pulse-Pounding Adventures of an Overworked Email In-Box
I've been lighting up my email in and out boxes like fireworks on the 4th of July for the past weeks putting the behind the scenes touches on a really jaw-dropping series of in-store events here at the shop. You've heard_about these already, right? Okay good! And now with everything humming along nicely it's time to get back to entertaining y'all here on the Isotope Communique...
To start off, here's a nice note and special something that showed up in my mailbox from Trevor V. that really made my day. I'm big in comics, baby!
Please consider this a small token of appreciation for the excellent customer service I received while visiting your store. This hi-res image is comprised of 6,888 Strangers In Paradise covers. Each cover was used at least once.

A Post-Apocalyptic...Relationship Drama?! From Jim Munroe, Salgood Sam & IDW
Continuing the Isotope's New Comics Peepshow with Therefore Repent!
When I first heard about the book, an original graphic novel about a post-rapture world in which magic works, thoughts of the terrific Strange Girl by Rick Remender (who actually worked with Therefore Repent's artist Salgood Sam on Sea of Red) popped into my head. But after reading the preview for the book I have to say that despite the similar Hollywwod style pitch, no two books could be more uniquely different.
Therefore Repent! approaches the Rapture in a very interesting human manner, despite the fact that our tour guides are a bird-headed girl, her mummy-wrapped boyfriend, and a talking dog. Yes, I know... I tend to not like the talking animal books either. Like I said, this book really surprised me!
Juxtaposing between oddly normal moments, in this case taking over a raptured couples' apartment and clearing out their garbage... with the violent retribution of the angel militia that still police those left behind, author Jim Monroe serves up a thinking man's look at the post-rapture apocalypse. And it's hard not to sit up and notice a book that so artfully explores the fundamental truth that even in end-of-the-world conditions our relationships, both good and those falling to dust, still take precedence over all else.
Really not like anything else out there, and definitely worth checking out!

The World Needs A Hero... But Not Like This! From Hickman, Bodenheim & Image Comics
Continuing the Isotope's New Comics Peepshow is style with A Red Mass For Mars!
Author/artist/designer Jonathan Hickman stunned us all right out of the gate with an amazing debut, Nightly News. And frankly we can't wait for him to blow the brains out of the back of our heads with a duo of forthcoming miniseries to kick off 2008 right, Pax Romana (check out a jaw-dropping pdf preview of it here) and January's beautiful looking Red Mass for Mars. Our holiday sneak peek stocking stuffer only allows for one glimpse into the future per entry, so let's pretend I didn't just link to that Pax Romana preview, and talk about that other book, shall we...?
Red Mass for Mars the post-apolcalyptic story about a superhero, Mars, who has the power to save the world, but isn't sure it's worth saving. Hickman has teamed with a really fantastic new talent Ryan Bodenheim to explore the last days of Earth and the one man who could save us all - but won't. I think you'll all really like taking a glimpse at this unique and subversive skewering of the heroic myth as much as I do!

Crime Noir Takes A Monstrous Turn From Bausch, Callahan & Oddgod Press
The Isotope apologizes for any loss of picture you may have experienced over the past couple days while our IT Department dealt with FTP difficulties. We now return to our regularly scheduled programming... the Isotope's virtual holiday stocking stuffer and New Comics Peepshow!
Fans of the Isotope's one-of-a-kind Comic Rockstars Toilet Seat Museum will no doubt recognize artist James Callahan's name, as his Zombie Batman lid is a perennial favorite. One look at his linework and there is no question he's got the raw talent to be the next Geoff Darrow or Frank Quitely. Callahan has been applying his signature gruesome art to the crime noir comic Strange Detective Tales with one hell of a writer in co-creator Jessie Bausch. And with the next issue imminent I couldn't resist including a sneak peek to whet your appetites.
And really, what's not to love about Strange Detective Tales? Bausch and Callahan enthrall with not only the strange, but indeed, the detective as well. Starring a vampiric private dick, Renfield, who takes readers on a personalized tour through a countryside littered with gigantic rabid insects and the gritty monster-ridden underworld of after-hours Los Angeles. Like any good bit of hard-boiled noir fiction, investigating the disappearance of the main character's ex-lover gets Renfield in way over his head. The cops, a cyclops pimp turned porn director, the alien mafia, and even Howard Hughes end up gunning for him. And did I mention that his partner is a dead ringer (no pun intended) for Peter Lorry?
People, you are going to like this book!

The Final Days of the Mythic Superhero From Remender, Broome & Dark Horse
We're kicking off the Isotope's week-long holiday stocking stuffer New Comics Peepshow with a bang!
Here at the Isotope we really like the books Rick Remender puts out, which all combine a real joy for the comic artform with a steel-toed combat boot to the back of the head to that which is anything less than exciting. And when Remender decides to put his spin on an over-worked genre it's of the take-a-sit-and-spin variety, as evidenced recently with books like the zombie-porno-movie opus XXXombies and his hyper-kinetic Fear Agent, the book that single-handily made bubble-helmet and raygun sci fi fun and badass again.
The End League tells the tale of Earth's last remaining ragtag group of superman and women on a desperate quest for the hammer of Thor in a world decimated by evil. And when I heard that Rick was teaming with WildC.A.T.S. artist Mat Broome to for this creator owned superhero epic I knew we just had to get you all a sneak peek!

The Isotope Celebrates The Holidays & 2008 With A Week-Long New Comics Peepshow
As we get together with family and friends to ring out the year in style, huddled up next to a toasty fireplace with big wonderful mugs of egg nog in hand... we raise a toast to all the great comics the last year brought us that made our bookshelves and comic boxes so very, very happy. What a really great year for comics.
But as always, my staff and I are eagerly looking forward to the next year's crop of comics and graphic novels and hoping that 2008 is as wonderful a year for comics as 2007 was. And it with this in mind that I've gotten together with some folks who I think are going to thrill us all in '08, and stuffing your virtual stockings full of sweet previews and sneak peeks of some of the most exciting books coming out in the beginning of next year!
Over the course of the week we're going to be featuring on this very website exclusive and tasty previews of some really, really great books I think you'll all want to check out.
Starting up first is Rick Remender and Mat Broome's crazy-cool new superhero series The End League from Dark Horse Comics, then we're serving up Image Comics' stunning A Red Mass For Mars by Ryan Bodenheim and comics genius Jonathan Hickman, and the next issue of Strange Detective Tales by Jessie Bausch and James Callahan (who did our famous Zombie Batman toilet seat cover) published by Oddgod Press, a cool new end-of-the-world original graphic novel Therefore Repent! from IDW by Jim Munroe and Salgood Sam you're going to love, and we're going right up to Christmas Eve to bring you an exclusive preview of one of the single most anticipated books of the last decade... (drum roll please)
The final issue of Rob Schrab's long-awaited Scud The Disposable Assassin!
Ahhh... that heats up the cold December days better than hot buttered rum, doesn't it? Stay tuned to the Isotope Communique and get your virtual stocking well stuffed.

52 Series as "Movie In Your Mind" Epic Trainwreck of Embarrassment!
You're not currently drinking a glass of milk are you? Because if you are you need to swallow that mouthful, put the glass down on the table over there, and prepare to laugh your ass off.
Those following my Twitter feed already know that the staff was setting up the shop yesterday while listening to the downright painful graphic audio adaptation of 52. Imagine, if you will, a radio play of the weekly mega-epic 52, complete with music, sound effects, and voice actors. Now add to this heady mix a healthy pinch of bad choices and you're baking up a craptacular trainwreck of insane hilarity!
Sure... I guess I can get behind Booster Gold sounding like Keanu Reeves from Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, and Lobo sounding like a poor-man's Macho Man Randy Savage. But why oh why did they decide to make the Middle Eastern monarch Black Adam sound exactly like the breakfast-cereal-hungry vampire Count Chocula?! And for that matter, why did they have to spend so much time on such lurid descriptions of lesbian sex scenes with Renee Montoya?!
Oh right... they're trying to make us laugh!
Well, laugh we did. And so will you, because our friends at iFanboy have posted up two of the most offensive clips from this gloriously ridiculous epic superheroic embarrassment!

James Kochalka Bids You To Indulge & Overdose Yourself on American Elf
As I was standing at the UPS Store today shipping off a set of funnybooks to a far off land, a friendly gentleman who was in line ahead of me grinned and enthused "Hey, you're the Isotope guy, right! You turned me onto that American Elf book and you were right, I loved it!"
We talked for a few minutes about Kochalka's comics, his best graphic novels, and also his great silly albums. And as we talked I excitedly remembered something I'd read yesterday on Pop Candy about a complete and extremely glorious over-haul of Mister Kochalka's website... "Why am I not telling everyone about this?" I thought to myself. So that's exactly what I'm doing now.
Go point your browsers towards the man's site, my fellow Kochalkaholics, because the entire American Elf archives are now free and on-line for you to binge like a freshman at a frat party on! Over-indulge yourself in nearly a decade worth of great daily strips until you pass out in a pathetic rumpled mess on the floor! And go do it now!
You can worry about the consequences of your actions some other time...

On those days when yours truly dreamily fantasizes about dropping off the face of the Earth for an extended roadtrip to discover strange wonders in new cities, I always turn to the perpetually-updated urban travel guide that is Gridskipper.
From the worst Irish bars in DC, to the best places to get Japanese pastries in Paris, to the amazing classic car museums of LA, to the best places in the Castro to get your hormone suppliments (featuring our amigo Todd Hellings!), to the kind of hotels Warren Ellis surely has already LiveJournaled about, the folks at Gridskipper serve all the urban travel high-weirdness and divine goodness that you could ever hope for.
We're honored to get featured on the site yet again, this time in their Ultimate Comic Lover's Guide to SF, along with the Cartoon Art Museum, the wonderful Kinokuniya Bookstore, WonderCon, our friends at Comic Outpost, that super-swell Giant Robot store, the east bay's Comic Relief, and many other fine comic-centric SF locales.

It's no secret how much the Isotope staff and I miss Seth Fisher. Not only did he make all of comics more fun with his amazing artwork, and his crazy-cool chest hair experiments, but he was one of the most genuinely nice people we've ever had the pleasure of meeting.
I honestly don't know anyone who met the man who wasn't bowled over by Fisher's friendly, trademark chaotic charm and bring-tears-to-your-eyes generosity (check out this birthday card he made for me). His death shocked us all, and the comics industry is definitely a lesser place without him.
It is with tremendous joyful pride that I get to tell you today that the Isotope will be bringing you fellow fans more Seth Fisher comics!
Our friends at Secret Headquarters have printed up a limited number of gorgeous new never-before-seen Fisher books as a fund-raiser for Seth's son's educational fund, and are also throwing a really great gallery exhibition of Seth's work (you should really go to if you can). The fine SHQ gentlemen are following in the generous Seth Fisher spirit and are making these new books available to a few of their favorite fellow retailers around the nation. The Isotope are lucky to be among this chosen few. Thanks guys!
These new books include a hilarious full-color children's mini Bob's Life, a Seth Fisher art sampler The Man with 1000 Noses, and a mini sketchbook featuring a behind the scenes look at Seth's work on the gorgeous Batman: Snow graphic novel.
We won't have many, as this print-run is tremendously limited, but If you'd like a copy of any of these books, please do drop me a line.
Now let's all raise out glasses in honor of Mister Fisher. We'll always miss you!

The Comic Book Script Archive Launches w/ Morrison, Bendis, Ennis, and Moore
I know how hard it can be for aspiring comic authors to get started writing their first scripts, so I think the recent launch of The Comic Book Script Archive is a really wonderful thing. Collecting up over 50 links to on-line scripts for many comics you probably own and love from comic authors like Grant Morrison, Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore, Geoff Johns, Paul Jenkins, Warren Ellis, Chuck Dixon, Mark Millar, Dwayne McDuffie, and Brian K. Vaughan. What a terrific resource!
So, don't go crazy all you aspiring comic book writing superstars, here's a great way to get to see how these creators put their scripts together and learn from the masters of the craft. And, hey, for those of you who are like me and just want to peek behind the comics wizard's curtain... well, it's pretty cool for us too!

Wow, the day has actually come.
As you probably know, for the last four and a half years, when the Isotope's beloved Enforcer Jared Guenther wasn't serving up funnybooks here at the shop he was building a well-deserved reputation as SF's premiere make up and special effects artist. We've watched and cheered him on as his career went from strength to strength over the years and always knew there would come the day when he'd be taking that career to the next level by relocating to tinseltown and barnstorming Hollywood.
Well dear friends, that day has come. His apartment is all packed onto moving trucks, both Jared and Anita have jobs eagerly awaiting them, and they've got a swank new Los Angeles pad prepared for their arrival. I'll tell you more about Jared's new gig with special effects masters tomorrow... but today my staff and I celebrate one of the best friends and co-workers we could ever hope to have had.
We're all going to miss him. And for those of you who have never met him, we know you're going to miss all those weekly funny faces and hilarious pictures Jared is famous for. So we decided to pack as many pictures of Jared into this week's staff photos as humanly possible.

You Must Show Reverence Rutu Modan's NYT Strips
One of the best books we've seen come through the Isotope front door recently is without a doubt Rutu Modan's Exit Wounds, a jaw-dropping original graphic novel from one of Israeli's most popular cartoonists. The utterly visceral story of life in one of the most volatile cities on the planet and one young soul's search for his missing father who is rumored to have been killed in a suicide bomb attack had me utterly transfixed from the moment I opened the first page.
If you haven't already had the pleasure of reading Exit Wounds, do give the great reviews a read, and drop me a line to ensure I put a copy of this amazing book aside for you.
For the rest of us who are already followers of her wonderful work and have been hungering for more of Modan's brilliance, we're in luck! Recently translated and running on line in the New York Times is a series of illustrated short stories you won't want to miss.

I'm off to the Small Press Expo in Bethesda, Maryland for the weekend (and will also be checking out the sites and sounds of Washington DC) for a weekend of comics, creators, and culture as only those crazy East Coasters can provide. Check back to see if I can manage to take some nifty pictures on my sexy mobile device for you to enjoy while I'm gone!

It's Time Again for a Wonderful Mini-Convention Of Zines, Mini-Comics, & Shoestring Garage Art
What could be better on this fine October weekend than to indulge your love for underground art with a trip to the SF ZineFest?
Yesterday I was describing to a person in the shop the feeling I get when reading a particular well-known comic book published by one of the industry's most popular houses. Despite not really caring much for the book's character personally, I was gushing about how much I adore the comic because it just exudes so much unashamed and unabashed love for it's subject matter that you can't help but have your heart swept up along in the bubbling current. And there really isn't anything better, y'know?
Which is exactly what I like about ZineFest... the love.
And qwe're not talking about one book here, but an entire convention devoted to the kind of work that oozes passion and adoration from some talented and oftentimes downright brilliant underground comic artists. Filled to the brim with cool xeroxed and hand-bound garage art comics and indy zines about a variety of strange and obsessive subjects, there's no way you can leave empty handed or without a smile on your face.
Go, my friends, and discover your next favorite comic creators!
