Wow, the day has actually come.

As you probably know, for the last four and a half years, when the Isotope's beloved Enforcer Jared Guenther wasn't serving up funnybooks here at the shop he was building a well-deserved reputation as SF's premiere make up and special effects artist. We've watched and cheered him on as his career went from strength to strength over the years and always knew there would come the day when he'd be taking that career to the next level by relocating to tinseltown and barnstorming Hollywood.

Well dear friends, that day has come. His apartment is all packed onto moving trucks, both Jared and Anita have jobs eagerly awaiting them, and they've got a swank new Los Angeles pad prepared for their arrival. I'll tell you more about Jared's new gig with special effects masters tomorrow... but today my staff and I celebrate one of the best friends and co-workers we could ever hope to have had.

We're all going to miss him. And for those of you who have never met him, we know you're going to miss all those weekly funny faces and hilarious pictures Jared is famous for. So we decided to pack as many pictures of Jared into this week's staff photos as humanly possible.

You rock, Jared!

Stuck at Home for Halloween?
Rob Zombie Does the YouTube

Happy Halloween from your friends at the Isotope!

After taking a couple weeks of internet detox, it brings me great joy to return to the communique with lots of tricks and treats in celebration of one of my favorite holidays of all! As most of you probably already know we're throwing a massive all-hallows eve bash tonight, but for those of you who won't be lurking the streets, the parties, and the bars tonight allow me to point your browsers towards a fright-filled festival you can enjjoy from the comfort of your very own desk or laptop...

Famed horror rocker and director Rob Zombie has taken over the YouTube and unleashing the terror by hand-picking the most horrifying videos on the internet, along with various tongue-in-cheek video parody trailers of Zombie's controversial Halloween remake. If that wasn't enough to celebrate the day long witching hour holiday, Mister Zombie is also giving away free VIP concert tickets for life too!

You won't want to miss music videos like The Zombeatles - "A Hard Day's Night of the Living Dead", cool Halloween instructional how-to movies, and the hilarious mini-feature House of 1000 Muppets.

You Must Show Reverence
Rutu Modan's NYT Strips

One of the best books we've seen come through the Isotope front door recently is without a doubt Rutu Modan's Exit Wounds, a jaw-dropping original graphic novel from one of Israeli's most popular cartoonists. The utterly visceral story of life in one of the most volatile cities on the planet and one young soul's search for his missing father who is rumored to have been killed in a suicide bomb attack had me utterly transfixed from the moment I opened the first page.

If you haven't already had the pleasure of reading Exit Wounds, do give the great reviews a read, and drop me a line to ensure I put a copy of this amazing book aside for you.

For the rest of us who are already followers of her wonderful work and have been hungering for more of Modan's brilliance, we're in luck! Recently translated and running on line in the New York Times is a series of illustrated short stories you won't want to miss.

The Most Popular Girl in Warsaw and Other Stories

And while we're on the Rutu subject... I also suggest watching her interview about Exit Wounds with the BBC here.

I'm off to the Small Press Expo in Bethesda, Maryland for the weekend (and will also be checking out the sites and sounds of Washington DC) for a weekend of comics, creators, and culture as only those crazy East Coasters can provide. Check back to see if I can manage to take some nifty pictures on my sexy mobile device for you to enjoy while I'm gone!

While I'm out of town for the weekend on a rocking trip to the Small Press Expo on the opposite coast, here are the the awesome guest masters of ceremonies who will be hosting all you fine folks while I'm gone...

Jason McNamara
Featured this Friday

Many of you already know Jason from several in-store events we've thrown for his books over the years, but for the rest of you let me introduce you to one of my favorite local comic authors.

Author of both the incredible original graphic novels Continuity and the Xeric Award winning First Moon, Mister McNamara is also one of the world's foremost Ramones devotees I have ever met. He has stories about shows he's attended that will dirty your sheets and bleach your brain.

Be warned: Jason is a recovering Spider-Man addict. Get him talking trivia at your own risk!

Josh Richardson
Featured this Saturday & Sunday

You all already know the Isotope's beloved Cultural Attaché who regularly struts his stuff on Sundays and we couldn't be more thrilled to have Josh rocking the shop for a double-dose weekend as only the man himself could do it!

Everybody knows this man knows the funnybooks, and has been responsible for the coloring, lettering, and behind-the-scenes production of many books you probably already own (*cough* The Goon, Monster Attack Network, Savage Dragon *cough*!)... but what you may not know is that Mister Richardson's brain is jam-packed with secret videogame information! As a full-time Core Tester for LucasArts. That's right, he gets checks from the Isotope and George Lucas, baby!

Stop on in and show these boys some love while I'm out of town, won't you?

Instead of going to the Castro and getting hauled off to jail this year, why not spend your Halloween in high Isotope style?

This year we've teamed up with our friends at the world's greatest newspaper The Onion, the best band in the entire city Triple Cobra, the non-speaking order of the Grande Chartreuse monastery who make the fabulous Chartreuse Liquor, the crazy gentlemen behind B-Minus Comics, and our all-time favorite cable access horror hostess Ms. Monster!

This is going to be absolutely legendary.

Enslaving Television, The Media, The City...
The Lovely Ms. Monster Conquers All!

Ah, yes. We do love our Ms. Monster here at the Isotope!

Many of you already know our favorite blue-skinned beauty who has been a multi-time featured Isotope guest star during our Eric Powell's Monster Mash-Up party and from our world premiere Hel On Ice screening or from hosting her annual Shock It To Me filmfests at the Castro Theatre.

For those of you who don't already know this vivacious vixen, well... that's about to change. Like the hundreds of hungry TV execs, cigar-chomping Hollywood producers, and garden-variety barflys before you, you too will soon fall under the intoxicating spell this captivating cadaver of inescapable enchantment weaves.

Of course, we here at the Isotope are going to do our part by throwing a Halloween party with her, the best band in the city, our friends at The Onion, and B-Minus Comics... which is shaping up to look like the SF Bay Area Halloween event of 2007. Mark your calendars!

But even more exciting is how Ms. Monster is laughing all the way to the blood bank recently as a contestant on the not-yet-aired Search for the Next Elvira TV show. Will the blue-hued horror hostess take the crown or will she flame-out along with the other hopefuls? Not even we know!

But what we do know is that the first episode of this show is available in advanced form on iTunes, right now before this show's premiere on the 13th... and it's absolutely 100% free of charge! Go, download now, people!

It's Time Again for a Wonderful Mini-Convention
Of Zines, Mini-Comics, & Shoestring Garage Art

What could be better on this fine October weekend than to indulge your love for underground art with a trip to the SF ZineFest?

Yesterday I was describing to a person in the shop the feeling I get when reading a particular well-known comic book published by one of the industry's most popular houses. Despite not really caring much for the book's character personally, I was gushing about how much I adore the comic because it just exudes so much unashamed and unabashed love for it's subject matter that you can't help but have your heart swept up along in the bubbling current. And there really isn't anything better, y'know?

Which is exactly what I like about ZineFest... the love.

And qwe're not talking about one book here, but an entire convention devoted to the kind of work that oozes passion and adoration from some talented and oftentimes downright brilliant underground comic artists. Filled to the brim with cool xeroxed and hand-bound garage art comics and indy zines about a variety of strange and obsessive subjects, there's no way you can leave empty handed or without a smile on your face.

Go, my friends, and discover your next favorite comic creators!

The Isotope proudly presents a one-night film fest featuring the legendary cinematic historian, b-movie poster curator, exploitation auteur director, and trash film connoisseur Jacques Boyreau!

Author of two of the swingin' sexiest must-have coffee table books ever printed, Trash: The Graphic Genius of Xploitation Movie Posters and the stunning The Male Mystique: Men's Magazine Ads of the 1960s and '70s as well as the cinematic whitesploitation visionary behind the anti-classics Planet Manson, I Do, I Die, and the science fiction LSD epic Candy Von Dewd, Boyreau is invading the Isotope with a 13 foot movie screen and hundreds of reels of lost b-movie exploitation cinema gems.

You'd better believe I am looking forward to this!

Also be sure to also check out Boyreau's Super Trash Peepshow slideshowing and talk featuring vintage artwork from trash films and other forms of disreputable pop culture at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts the following night. You know where I'll be!
