Danica Novgorodoff Interview
A Comic Pimp Not to Miss!

This week's installment of Isotope Proprietor James Sime's weekly Comic Pimp column at features an interview with the lovely and talented Danica Novgorodoff.

Find out more about her critically-acclaimed award-winning mini-comic "The Late Freeze," how she got her foot in the door as a designer for First Second Books, and what Ms. Novgorodoff did when a well known comic creator told her that she wasn't ready for comics.

Danica Novgorodoff & the Comic Pimp @ CBR

Face It, Tiger...
You Hit the Jackpot

Here at the Isotope we believe that the best way to show our appreciation for those folks who help make life excellent is to surprise them with something unexpected and exciting.

As with any surprise you never know when or what we will do but chances are if you're one of our regulars we've gifted you a stack of graphic novels out of the blue, made something neat because we knew you specifically wanted to have it, surprised you by bringing in your favorite creator for an in-store event and made sure you got the royal introduction, put something elusive and hard to find in your file, or took you out for dinner and drinks when you least expected it.

This is one such story, blatantly pilfered from Sean Maher's Quality Control blog.

Isotope Lovin'!

What I've got for you today is massive, massive love for James Sime, Kirsten Baldock and everyone at the Isotope for tracking this puppy down and hooking me up on my New Comics Day with the best gift ever:

The faithful and well-read among you will of course recognize the artwork of the brilliant Mr. David Petersen, creator of my new favorite series, Mouse Guard. This is original artwork (from the cover, no less) for the sold-out Mouse Guard Sketchbook! I mean: HOLY SHIT!

Words fail me. The owner of my local comics shop noticing a new favorite book of mine, tracking down the cover art, contacting the artist, buying it and having it shipped to the store all as appreciation for my patronage? Un-fucking-believable. I guess it just goes to show that when you share the love, as I try to do every day, sometimes it comes back to you even bigger than you sent it.

This gorgeous page couldn't possibly go on my wall fast enough, save that my good pals over at AiT/Planet Lar hooked me up first with the scan and a beautiful frame.

God bless America, the Isotope, Mouse Guard, and us, everyone.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Easter Sunday: Badasses & Big Wheels
In a High Speed Race Down Lombard

If you've been to San Francisco chances are you've seen the death defying grade, cobblestone roadway, and endless switchbacks of SF's world famous Lombard Street.

And even if you haven't thought about it, good thing that someone decided an annual death defying plunge on the back of a second hand Big Wheels was just what Lombard needed. How could the Isotope resist attending and cheering on the brave men, women, and children who put their lives at risk during the annual BYOBW?

The Reviews Are Coming In
And It's 100% Pure Love

Here at the Isotope we know that being chosen as the winner of the annual Isotope Award for Excellence in Mini-Comics means much more than just getting a cool trophy and a friendly pat on the back. As always, this award is about exposure... and we're thrilled to see the first batches of reviews for 2006's winner Danica Novgorodoff's beautiful mini "A Late Freeze" are starting to roll in and each is up packed to the rim with love. But don't take our word for it, read the reviews for yourself!

"Novgorodoff combines a marvelous design sensibility with equal portions of absurdity and romance... a really marvelous example of an illustrated narrative" - David Welsh at Precocious Curmudgeon

"Heartbreaking, but in that rare way that actually makes you feel better" - Sean Maher @ Quality Control.

"An odd, almost-wordless love story about a robot and a bear (and a frog) with full-color, expressive art." - Slave Labor Graphics' Jennifer De Guzman @ SLG Blog

"Something that's well worth looking out for. Excellent." - Graeme McMillan @ Savage Critic

"Vast empty spaces with small figures that are deceptively simple, silent sequences filled with emotion, and gorgeous attention to world-building and design are used to great effect without a clear derivation." - Kevin Church at BeaucoupKevin

"Her mini is definitely a beautiful object with exquisite design" - Oni Press' James Lucas Jones @ The Engine

The 2006 Isotope Award Goes To
Danica Novgorodoff's A Late Freeze

She's an artist, author, painter, photographer, designer, mini-comic creator... and now Danica Novgorodoff has joined the ranks of the winners of the Isotope Award for Excellence in Mini-Comics!

Danica's work captured the hearts of our award judges with a slickly quiet mini about the love affair between a bear and a robot. Smart, elegant, and utterly heartbreaking, A Late Freeze is the kind of story that makes you fall in love with comics all over again.

And in person this firecracker from NYC made quite the unforgettable impression on the hundreds in attendance for APE AFTERMATH.

Congrats out to Ms. Novgorodoff for a well-deserved win!
