I've been trying to find the time between putting together this and this and making these and these and doing this and this and dealing with these and these to write to you all about the bad, bad news we've been hearing about our beloved Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar.
As many of you know, this famous tiki bar is an amazing San Francisco historical monument that we here at the Isotope adore. For the last 6 years it has always been one of the major stops on our twice-annual Tiki Bar Tours, it's where we often take our favoritecelebrity superstars when they come to visit... and there is an indoor lake in that place and it rains inside!
There really is no place else like it on Earth.
This news of the Tonga Room possibly getting torn down to build some lame condos has been buzzing through my in-box and really breaking my heart for a couple weeks now. Folks have rallied to the cause to save this landmark, but at this point it's impossible to know if it has helped. I won't lie to you, I fear the worst dear friends. So for you out-of-towners in for WonderCon who are planning to joining us for 2009's Tiki Tour with Darick Robertson (the Tonga is our first stop of the night), this may indeed be your very last time to see this gorgeous and amazing tiki bar before it goes away.
(sigh).
Like my beloved Gobbler Restaurant in the far off land of Wisconsin before it, I know a good kitchy thing when I see it and want to show the Tonga Room all the love I can while I still can. So I'm going to do my best to spend as much time and create as many memories of this fantastic place as I can before it is gone. I hope you do too.
